Hoosier Hotels Recognized for Culinary Traditions

Two Hoosier hotels have been recognized for their dining options. French Lick Springs Hotel and the Morris Inn at Notre Dame have both earned spots on The 2019 Historic Hotels of America Top 25 List of hotels with unique culinary traditions. 

Historic Hotels of America attributes the invention of tomato juice in 1917 to French Lick Springs Hotel’s Chef Louis Perrin. According to the story, the chef ran out of oranges for orange juice and substituted tomatoes instead.  A tomato juice company was then formed in French Lick following its popularity and mass produced the beverage.

The Morris Inn garnered recognition on the list for its signature cocktail, The Dexter, a drink that dates back to the early 1900s. The Dexter features Blanton’s Bourbon, Cointreau, Sweet Vermouth and fresh lemon juice. Blanton’s Bourbon is featured in the recipe because its stopper is shaped as a horse- a callback to the drink’s namesake.
