Construction Begins on South Whitley Park
Construction has begun on a new park in downtown South Whitley. The Don and Vi LeBrun Gateway Park is slated for completion this fall.
The Parks Department and Whitley County EDC launched a crowdfunding campaign in February to raise support for the new park.
The park was selected by the IHCDA to receive a matching grant of $30,000, provided that the community raised the first $30,000 toward the project. The community overcame that goal before the deadline in April.
"The Parks and Recreation Department is excited about potential upcoming events in the new park. We envision events such as concerts, outdoor movies, farmers markets, food truck events, and more. We believe this park will bring people together for community engagement and will bring some much-needed energy to downtown South Whitley," said South Whitley Parks Department Director Jeff Beers in a news release.
The park plans include an entryway, outdoor seating, new landscaping and flower boxes, a portable stage and a theater screen. A mural is also planned for front of the building next to the park.
