The university says a group of alumni wishing to honor the Griners worked to raise funds to support operating expenses and all educational opportunities associated with the art gallery.
Alumnus and Garfield creator Jim Davis championed these fundraising efforts.
Ned Griner, a Ball State professor of art and arts advocate, retired from Ball State in 1994 after a 41-year teaching career, 33 of which were spent at Ball State.
He began the metals program, taught throughout the art curriculum, and served as department head from 1970 to 1981.
Gloria Griner was a Ball State assistant professor of music education, taught piano and music education, and was a performer and accompanist at Ball State for 30 years.
