The trend of record freshman classes among Hoosier universities continues. Taylor University in Upland and Marian University in Indianapolis say they are each celebrating all-time high numbers of incoming students as classes begin for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Taylor University says 577 new students will begin classes next week on the Grant County campus. The number includes 538 freshman, which tops the previous record of 519 in 2014, as well as 39 transfer students.

Marian University is projecting that, for the first time in its history, it will surpass 400 first-time full-time freshman. Official enrollment numbers will not be reported until mid-September. The university says more than 420 students are currently registered for classes, which indicates a 25 percent increase in enrollment over last year.

"In 2015, Marian University mapped our vision with a 10-year strategic plan, and established a goal of doubling the number of graduates by 2025," said Marian President Daniel Elsener. "In 2015, we had 686 graduates. This year, we conferred 933 degrees. If we continue to grow freshman enrollment and graduate programs at the current rate, we will easily exceed our goal of 1,500 graduates by 2025."

Marian’s previous freshman enrollment record was set in 2016.
