Kenzie Academy Inc., a technology industry apprenticeship program that has its first campus in Indianapolis, has received a $4.2 million seed round of funding. The company uses what it calls a "college-alternative" model that involves a year of immersive learning and a year of paid work at its consulting subsidiary, Kenzie Studio.

Kenzie Academy says the investment, led by New York-based ReThink Education and supported by Butler University, Learn Start, Gratitude Railroad and Kelly Services, will support its "Middle America" training objectives. In addition to software engineering courses, Kenzie Academy says the new funds will help expand its offerings into digital marketing and user experience design.

The company is headquartered in San Francisco, but its first office is in Indianapolis. The first Kenzie Academy cohort launched in January at the downtown location of The Speakeasy. In November, Kenzie Academy raised its first, $1.6 million seed round.
