The foundation says the program recognizes contributions of Indiana authors to the literary landscape throughout the state and country.
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, a former resident of Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, won the $10,000 National Author Award. As part of her win, Bradley has selected the Georgetown branch library in Fort Wayne to receive a $2,500 grant on behalf of the foundation.
"Libraries were a huge part of my life," said Bradley. "When I was growing up, my mom and I went every week to the Georgetown branch library…and sometimes made trips to the main library downtown, where I loved the enormous globe in the lobby. In Indianapolis the library printed lists of upcoming new releases; I kept careful watch so I could always check out the new Dick Francis novels the day they were released."
Indianapolis Native Sandy Eisenberg Sasso won the $7,500 Regional Author Award, while Owen County resident James Alexander Thorn won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Thorn was also the inaugural winner of the Indiana Authors Award in 2009. Both Sasso and Thorn will also provide a $2,500 grant to an Indiana library of their choice.
The foundation has also named the finalists for the 2018 Emerging Author Award. The nominees are writers who have published no more than two books during their lifetime and the books must have been published within the past 10 years.
The finalists for the $5,000 prize are Deborah E. Kennedy, Elizabeth Klehfoth, and Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi. The winner will be named during the Indiana Authors Award Dinner on October 13.
