Our partners at WTHI-TV report the Capital Improvement Board in Vigo County has renewed its commitment to the facility and plans to host a public meeting next month.
The CIB says, if it becomes a reality, the convention center would be free standing and not attached to the Hulman Center, though it could be located nearby. Last month during a special session of the Indiana General Assembly, legislators passed a bill that allows the county to make its own decision on a food and beverage tax to fund convention or tourism projects.
The public hearing, set for July 2 at the Vigo County Annex, will involve discussion on a proposed food and beverage tax. If approved, a 1 percent tax could generate up to $2.1 million for the CIB.
Last week, the Terre Haute City Council unanimously approved a resolution showing its support for a downtown convention center, according to WTHI. Council members said the facility would bring in more tourists to the area and millions in economic impact.
