The Porter County Arboretum is now being operated as the Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest. The change comes through a gift from the Taltree Arboretum & Gardens Foundation's Board of Directors, along with Damien and Rita Gabis.

Purdue Northwest will still operate the property as a public arboretum for educational, public, conservation and recreational use. The $12 million gift to the university was announced in December 2017 and is the largest donation in the history of the PNW campuses. Purdue Northwest Chancellor Thomas Keon says  “We are pleased to honor the Gabis family, founders of the arboretum, and welcome this opportunity to expand the mission and impact of both the arboretum and the university in Northwest Indiana,” “PNW is committed to honoring the conservation, environmental, and public education mission of the arboretum.”

The arboretum will offer new ways for students and faculty to research educational opportunities near the PNW campuses in Hammond and Westville. The 300+acre preserve features formal gardens, wetlands, woodlands, and over 6 miles of hiking trails. The dog-friendly arboretum is open year-round and offers classes and educational opportunities for all ages.
