Officials at Perry Central Junior-Senior High School in Leopold are celebrating the opening of a new student-led manufacturing company. The school says  Commodore Manufacturing will provide "opportunities for students to gain valuable skills in the advanced manufacturing field."

The company was created through a partnership with Jasper Engines & Transmissions and Waupaca Foundry in Tell City. Students will take part in on-the-job experiences such as pitching ideas to potential customers and packaging parts for delivery.

"We have been honored to partner with Perry Central over the past several years and with Commodore Manufacturing," said Luke Bawel, vice president of Jasper Engine's Supply Chain and Logistics Groups. "They are leading the way in education, giving students the opportunity to learn the skills needed to step into the evolving manufacturing world, as well as learn the soft skills that so many lack when leaving school to find a career. We are excited to see this next step as they continue to challenge themselves and their students."

Commodore Manufacturing also offers opportunities for students to earn Manufacturing Skill Standards Council certification, dual credit through Ivy Tech Community College and internships.

    • Employers Are Key to Improving Healthcare

It's no longer news that American healthcare is broken. In the U.S., we spend more than $3 trillion a year on healthcare - more than any other developed nation - yet we are in overall poorer health than similarly developed countries. But dealing with healthcare's myriad issues isn't the only challenge facing business owners and employers. They're also grappling with how to attract and retain a shrinking supply of employees.

We've reached a point now, however, where it seems there are more people who don't remember this than who do.
