In a filing with the IURC, the city is requesting to raise water rates by nearly 50 percent in an effort to replace aging infrastructure.
If approved, the rate increase would be implemented in two phases. The additional revenue generated by the rate increase would be used toward improvements to water treatment plants, repair or replacement of water mains, valves and hydrants, a new office building and billing system upgrades, among others.
This would be the first water rate increase for South Bend since 2006.
The field hearing will take place at the South Bend Century Center – Recital Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m. Customers will have the opportunity to speak directly to commissioners. However, the commissioners will not be allowed to answer questions because the case remains pending.
