SOUTH BEND -

Two former presidential chiefs of staff will speak in South Bend tonight. Andrew Card and Denis McDonough, who served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, respectively, will discuss U.S. foreign policy as part of the Notre Dame Forum.

The event, titled "Views from the West Wing: How Global Trends Shape U.S. Foreign Policy," will be moderated by Maura Policelli, executive director of the Global Policy Initiative in the university's Keough School of Global Affairs.

The keynote event will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Leighton Concert Hall of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the event is free and open to the public.

"As principal advisers to Presidents Bush and Obama, Andy and Denis played important roles in the White House during many significant international events over the past 20 years, including the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and the raid in 2011 by U.S. Navy SEALs on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan,” said Rev. John Jenkins, president Notre Dame’s. "We are honored that they have agreed to participate in the Notre Dame Forum, and I know their insights will stimulate members of our campus and local community to think deeply about U.S. foreign policy in an increasingly complex world."

Card was Bush's chief of staff from November 2000 to April 2006, the second-longest-serving chief of staff in White House history. He was the person who informed Bush of the terrorist attacks on September 11 as the president was speaking to a group of children at an elementary school in Florida.

McDonough joined the Obama campaign in 2007 and was appointed chief of staff in January 2013. He is an executive fellow of the Global Policy Initiative in the Keough School at Notre Dame.
