Titans to Play Ball For Ivy Tech Northeast

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast has launched a baseball program. Longtime Fort Wayne area coach Lance Hershberger will be the team's first head coach. He started Indiana Tech's baseball program in 1990 and later took it to five consecutive NAIA World Series.

Ivy Tech Northeast has submitted a letter of intent to join Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Officials are exploring the possibility of hooking up with a regional conference. Ancilla College and Vincennes University are two NJCAA baseball programs also in Division II. Ivy Tech says it would be eligible to provide athletic scholarships limited to tuition, books, fees and supplies required for coursework.

Chancellor Jerrilee Mosier says "under Lance's leadership, Titans Baseball will provide a new opportunity for Ivy Tech students in northeast Indiana, allowing them to develop their potential on the field and in the classroom, as they prepare for their future."

The team will play and practice at Bishop Dwenger High School's Shoaff Park. Ivy Tech says funding will come from sponsorships, private donors, fundraising and student activity fees. The campus has club basketball and soccer programs that are also called the Titans. The baseball team's first player commitment is Alec Agler from Northrop High School in Fort Wayne.
