Alumnus to Head Purdue’s School of Nuclear Engineering

Subscribe NowSeungjin Kim (pictured) has been named the next head of the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University. He will take over the position on June 1. He is a professor of nuclear engineering and mechanical engineering and director of the Advanced Multiphase Flow Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. Kim earned his both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue. He received his master’s in electrical and computer engineering in 1992 and his doctoral degree in nuclear engineering in 1999. Kim has taken leadership positions in his field of expertise and serves as chair of the American Nuclear Society Thermal Hydraulics Division. He received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society in 2011. Kim’s research ranges from reactor thermal-hydraulics to reactor system analysis code and reactor safety. His work is recognized and used by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for thermal-hydraulic analysis of nuclear reactor systems. Many international research groups employ his work on advanced two-phase flow instrumentation. Kim succeeds former school head Ahmed Hassanein. Klod Kokini, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering, served as interim head of Nuclear Engineering for more than a year.
