The first is a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ware Plant Science Production Facility and the other is a ribbon cutting for the new Multicultural House.
The new $525,000 science space will be located next to the Dowden Science Building and is designed to be divided into independent zones: one side for student instruction and one for research and production. Haupert Institute for Agricultural Studies Director Raymond Porter says "this new facility will provide needed space for students in agriculture courses to work with crop plants and learn about how they grow. Ag students will have hands-on learning and research opportunities in the area of plant and soil sciences, with the potential for aquaponics as well. Faculty and students in biology, chemistry, occupational therapy, and other programs can also benefit from the additional space for instruction and research. And the Horticulture Club or future ag-related clubs could use some of the space for plant propagation and production. We are enthusiastic about the possibilities." It will take up 2,000 square-feet and is named in honor of the late Dale Ware, a 1936 HU graduate who served as a teacher in Huntington County.
The Multicultural House will be open to all students and the university says it will "serve as a tool to bridge the gap between all cultures creating a dedicated space for cultures to be displayed and learned about." It will be fully-furnished and feature conference, study, office, lounge, gaming and kitchen space. Multicultural Affairs and Minority Student Engagement Director Daryl Singleton says "it will serve as a place where students can feel comfortable to engage with other students who aren’t like them and to be a cultural center for our campus and community." Renovations began in November and wrapped up at the beginning of the Spring Semester.
