The federally-funded work is part of what Wendy Dant Chesser calls a "superfecta" — road, rail, water and air — of transportation-related developments supporting a flurry of commercial and industrial activity. The Indiana Department of Transportation is taking public feedback Wednesday on alternative routes for the second of three sections of the corridor.
Chesser tells Inside INdiana Business the groundwork for growth has been decades in the making. "I think if you look at the work that was done in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s to get us to this point today, we’re just now starting to reap the benefits of all of that investment that folks 30 and 40 years ago put into place.," she said.
Chesser says once the Heavy Haul Corridor is complete, the region’s next big focus will be finding ways to connect the port, River Ridge and traffic using the revamped Ohio River Bridges to the Clark Regional Airport via roadways. "We have other projects that are long-term projects on the list," she said "and once you get one of them completed, you just move on to the next one."
The public open house for the Corridor section connecting the port to State Road 265 exit at Old Salem Road will be Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Utica Elementary School in Jeffersonville. The first section, which runs through the River Ridge Commerce Center, was completed late last year. The corridor project kicked off in 2015.
