The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority has issued a Request for Proposals from consulting firms for a study on the feasibility of such a facility.
The RDA is seeking to determine whether there is a market demand for a convention center and, if so, how much of an economic impact it would have on the region. The feasibility study would also suggest locations within Lake County that would be best suited for a convention center and the types of characteristics and components it would have, such as size, design and food and beverage offerings.
Northwest Indiana RDA Chief Executive Officer Bill Hanna told Inside INdiana Business in September research into a potential new convention center would "honestly ask the question" of whether the market will need to fill the void that will be left after the Radisson at Star Plaza comes down in Merrillville. At that time, the Star Plaza Theatre was also scheduled to be taken down, but that decision was changed in November.
The deadline for proposals is March 3.
