On Wednesday, the project cleared what Kroger said is the first step of the development process: a purchase agreement for the land with the City of La Porte Redevelopment Commission.
The new Marketplace will offer a larger selection of items like cheese, wine and apparel and will cover 123,000 square-feet, bringing "many additional jobs" to La Porte County.
Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report New Porte Landing, the property where the new store will be located, was previously the site of farm equipment manufacturer Allis Chalmers. It has been in the process of remediation for the last 20 years. The publication also reports the city’s redevelopment commission has used a $10 million bond issue to cover costs of cleanup and to get Thomas Rose Industrial Park shovel ready.
The store is expected to open in 2019, providing additional approvals are met.
