Organizers expect the Griffin Bike Park, which has cost around $1.3 million so far, to eventually attract around 70,000 visitors per year. Founder and Vice Chairman Gene Griffin will appear this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television.
Griffin says additional electrical work and shower and restroom construction will bump the total planned investment up to $2 million. The park covers 300 acres and has more than 50 features such as dirt jump competition, dual slalom and cross country race areas.
The park is recognized as an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project and is named in honor of Sgt. Dale Griffin, Gene’s son who was killed during the war in Afghanistan in 2009.
Some 2,000 hours of volunteer work from hundreds of volunteers has already gone into preparing the park for its grand opening events Saturday and Sunday. The project has received support from 86 corporate and foundation sponsors.
