The study phase will begin this month with a final master plan expected to be complete early next year.
The LaGrange County EDC says Kentucky-based GRW Engineer, which has a location in Indianapolis, will examine water, sewer, gas, electric and telecommunications infrastructure on either side of State Road 9 from the Indiana-Michigan state line to the town of LaGrange. The organization will then work with the engineers to identify sites that could be used for potential commercial, industrial, residential and retail development.
LaGrange County Councilor Charlie Ashcraft says the study is "critical to growth in our community." Officials hope the master plan will lead to more infrastructure investments along the State Road 9 Corridor in preparation of future economic development projects.
"The State Road 9 Corridor, with its access to the Indiana Toll Road, is an ideal location for future private development," said Ryne Krock, chief executive officer of the LaGrange County EDC. "Unfortunately, without adequate infrastructure in place, we cannot expect to see businesses move in. This study will provide key decision makers in LaGrange County and with its utility providers to make informed decisions on critical investments in sewer, water, gas, electric and telecommunications."
The study is being funded by the LaGrange County Redevelopment Commission, NIPSCO, Wabash Valley Power Association and the LaGrange County EDC.
