WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Nine schools in Indiana have been named 2016 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The honor from the U.S. Department of Education recognizes academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps.

In all, 329 schools throughout the country received the award this year. The program is in its 34th year and fewer than 8,500 schools have received the honor over that time. U.S. Secretary of Education John King says "National Blue Ribbon Schools are proof that we can prepare every child for college and meaningful careers." He called the winners "shining examples" of their respective communities and said the schools are "on the cutting edge, pioneering innovative educational practices - professional learning communities, project-based learning, social and emotional learning, positive behavior systems."

Performance is based on test scores from all students and subgroups of students, as well as graduation rates. Annual nominations are limited to a total of 420 schools.

The Indiana schools are:

  • Brown Elementary School in Brownsburg
  • Cathedral High School in Indianapolis
  • Geist Elementary School in Fishers
  • Lexington Elementary School in Scott County
  • Northpoint Elementary School in Granger
  • South Ripley Junior High School in Versailles
  • Union Elementary School in Zionsville
  • West Clay Elementary School in Carmel
  • Weston Elementary School in Greenfield

Though I fully respect and agree with this results-oriented perspective on content, in practice it can be...
