Adults with bachelor’s degrees who return to certify as teachers will be eligible for a 60 percent reduction in tuition under the "Transition to Teaching" program.
The university says program requires 17 credit hours at a discounted rate of $385 per credit hour. Those looking to take part in the program could earn a secondary education certification in math, life science/biology, chemistry, physics, history, English, visual art and music.
"School corporations in the Tri-State area report a reduction in applications for teaching positions," said Department Chair Sharon Gieselmann. “The University of Evansville desires to produce more quality teacher candidates for schools in the region so corporations can continue to offer excellent educational opportunities for their P-12 students."
Mary Kessler, dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences at UE, says much of the instruction in the program is based in internships and student teaching experiences. "We recognize the value of classroom experience and mentoring from an effective teacher to help a candidate better develop the skills necessary to provide quality instructional strategies and classroom management."
Kessler says the school is seeking state certification of a "Transition to Teaching" program for elementary education as well. The school hopes to offer that program beginning in the spring of 2017.
