(NYSE: ZBH) is establishing a medical training and education facility in India. The initiative is part of a multi-year partnership with the Indo UK Institutes of Health designed to boost health care infrastructure in the south Asian nation.
Over the next three years, Zimmer Biomet says it will pump around $5 million into the center on the King’s College Hospital campus in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. It will focus on training more than 1,000 orthopaedic surgeons per year on new procedures and using the company’s medical devices.
Zimmer Biomet President David Dvorak says "we are proud to support the Indo UK Institutes of Health’s important mission to make world-class healthcare affordable and broadly accessible to people across India, regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status. Currently, India has approximately 10 orthopaedic surgeons per million people. This is inadequate to meet current demand for orthopaedic care, let alone meet the anticipated surge in demand from India’s aging population, which is expected to triple by 2030. Zimmer Biomet’s partnership with IUIH addresses this immediate and critical gap in delivering patient care by providing much-needed continuing education and hands-on orthopaedic surgical training."
The company says it currently serves some 50,000 Indian patients per year.
IUIH is partnering with the United Kingdom’s National Health Service to build 11 "Medicities" in major Indian states. The one at Amaravati’s King’s College Hospital will be the first and include a 1,000-bed hospital, medical and nursing school, student, staff and hotel facilities and a center focused on medical specialties that will be run by a third-party.
Zimmer Biomet is the first industry partner to join the effort. Groundbreaking is set for later this year.
