The boards of trustees from Purdue University and Indiana University have approved an extension of the management structure for IPFW. The agreement, which was scheduled to expire June 30, has been renewed for five more years. The boards are calling for a proposed revised governance structure to be presented at their respective meetings in December.

Under the current agreement, Purdue has fiscal responsibility for IPFW and both IU and Purdue have degree programs at the campus.

"Over the past three years, IPFW has been the subject of four committee processes to study the governance structure," said Mike Berghoff, chair of Purdue’s Board of Trustees. "The studies have raised some interesting possibilities that have the potential to benefit students and community stakeholders, but more time is needed to fully consider the ideas and proposals and the best path for the institution, its people and the Fort Wayne community."

Purdue says trustees and administrators of both universities have agreed on a primary objective, which would be to realign the academic missions of IPFW. In this scenario, IU would focus on its health sciences initiative and Purdue would be the governing entity of IPFW with responsibility for the remaining programs and any future programs.

Purdue says the universities will continue to discuss the option of realignment and will take into account recommendations set forth by a working group convened by the state Legislative Services Agency and IPFW’s University Strategic Alignment Process report released last month. A final proposal is expected by December.
