Work will include tile roof repair, masonry and window rehabilitation, system upgrades, interior improvements and ADA upgrades.
Old Stoney originally served as the city’s high school until it was badly damaged by fire in 1922. The building reopened in 1926 and served as a high school and junior high school until 1974. The building was then leased by a nonprofit organization until it was purchased by the city in 1995.
Indiana Landmarks says a building assessment in 2014 showed Old Stoney needed several repairs and upgrades. The organization says Old Stoney will meet "21st century needs in 19th century style" once the rehabilitation is complete.
Various city offices that had resided in Old Stoney moved out in February ahead of the project. The city says plans call for staff to move back in this fall, with the project expected to be completed around February 2017.
