The Elkhart Truth reports Goshen Theater Inc. is asking for $4 million from tax increment financing funds as part of its $13.7 million plans.
The organization went before the city’s redevelopment commission Tuesday to present its case. The publication reports Board President Gina Leichtly says the remainder of the funding could come from sources including the Community Foundation of Elkhart County ($5 million), a capital campaign ($2.5 million) and through the Regional Cities initiative ($2.2 million). The northern Indiana proposal for regional cities included three projects in Goshen, one of which being the theater project.
The proposal still needs commission and full City Council approval. If it clears all funding hurdles, the Truth reports work could start next year. The commission is set to discuss the potential funding March 8.
The theater opened in 1907 as the Jefferson Theater. In the late-1940s, it was renamed The Goshen Theater after it was discovered a new
marquee couldn’t fit the full Jefferson Theater name.
