Hoosier Sites Nominated for National Register
Indiana Landmarks has made 18 matching grants to support the nominations of Hoosier sites and districts to the National Register of Historic Places. The funding is part of the Partners in Preservation program.
Many of the sites under consideration are located in northern Indiana including five landmarks related to a Swedish settlement, which is located in what is now the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter County. Tiffany Tolbert, manager of the PIP program, says being listed on the National Register of Historic Places comes with many benefits.
"For commercial historic districts, it can be eligible for federal historic preservation tax credits which are utilized to promote economic development," says Tolbert. "For private property owners, there is still available the state rehabilitation tax credit for residential properties. There is also just the recognition of knowing your property is on the national register which, for some of the private homes, that is what the owner desires."
The sites and districts being nominated include:
- University Club, 970 North Delaware Street, Indianapolis (Marion Co.)
- Mt. Pleasant Beech Church, Carthage (Rush Co.)
- Ward Township District School No. 5, vicinity of 950 East 700 North, Ridgeville (Randolph Co.)
- Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Historic District near Terre Haute (Vigo Co.)
- Center Ridge Cemetery, 704 West Johnson St., Sullivan (Sullivan Co.)
- Vevay Historic District, Vevay (Switzerland Co.)
- Pleasant Ridge Historic District, Charlestown (Clark County)
- Bourbon Downtown and Residential Historic Districts (Marshall Co.)
- Peru Commercial Historic District (Miami Co.)
- South Whitley Historic District (Whitley Co.)
- Cline House, 313 Maumee St., Angola (Steuben Co.)
- First United Methodist Church, 654 East 4th Street, Hobart (Lake Co.)
- Kneipp-Sylvan Springs Sanitarium , Rome City (Noble Co.)
- Five Swedish landmarks in Porter Co. (in Porter, IN: Gust Lindstrom Site, 399 Howe Road; Peter Larson Site, 750 Howe Road; Chellberg Farm, 900 North Mineral Springs Road; Charles P. Nelson Site, 891 North Mineral Springs Road; and Oscar and Irene Nelson Site, 217 Dunes Highway, Chesterton)
Tolbert says the PIP program is designed to provide matching funding for property owners and nonprofits to hire professional consultants to complete the nomination. That includes doing the research, photography and architectural descriptions that the nomination process requires.
Tolbert adds all of the nominations are in various states of review by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. She says they should know more about which sites have been added to the national register sometime in 2016 but an exact time frame is not known.
Indiana Landmarks Northwest Field Office Director Tiffany Tolbert says the program has several benefits.
