As part of National Coding Week, which kicked off Monday, Eleven Fifty Academy in Carmel is hosting several events, including a Tweet-athon, developer workshop and open house designed to raise awareness of high-level programming skills. President John Qualls was joined by academy student Sean Livingston on Inside INdiana Business Television and said Eleven Fifty’s immersive style can ramp up skills in a short time-frame.
Eleven Fifty says nationwide demand for coding is "far outpacing" the current supply in the work force. Jobs in the industry can start in the $100,000 per year-range and some estimates suggest more than one million programming jobs could go unfilled for lack of candidates with the right training.
Qualls says one of the academy’s goals is to close that gap… and fast. The nonprofit says many of its courses can prepare students for a career change, "skilling-up," or an entry-level position in app development in weekend, five-day or week-long sessions. It also offers a consultant program for businesses looking to partner and for select students to serve as apprentices.
The training is supported by donations from individuals, companies and other partnerships. To date, more than 500 students from four countries and 20 states have taken courses. Eleven Fifty says it hopes to train more than 2,000 next year.
