Ivy Tech, Evansville Schools Detail ‘Coach’ Collaboration

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) announced their College Connection Coach initiative today.
The College Connection Coaches will be Ivy Tech employees embedded in EVSC high schools. Their role is to create and promote a culture of college attainment as well as provide career counseling and advisement. They will be working hand-in-hand with school guidance counselors, administrators, and teachers to provide career counseling, to help students earn college credit while still in high school, and to map out career and educational pathways.
“This partnership will mean so much to our students… and ultimately to our community's future,” said David Smith, EVSC superintendent. “This intentional outreach for specific career counseling, will help students to be able to select the most appropriate post-secondary education for their career goals.”
Currently, Ivy Tech employs a College Connection Coach who is embedded in Harrison High School and Central High School. Ivy Tech will hire two additional coaches this year, to cover North High School, Reitz High School, Bosse High School, New Tech Institute, and the Academy for Innovative Studies.
“The Indiana Career Council estimates that the state will experience a skills gap of 675,000 workers by 2025; it means we have a looming crisis in Indiana. In addition, I continually hear from employers that they can't find qualified applicants for the hundreds of skilled jobs they have available,” said Ivy Tech Chancellor, Jonathan Weinzapfel. “We believe that one of the solutions to this tremendous challenge is the College Connection Coach initiative.”
Ivy Tech Community College is the state's largest public postsecondary institution and the nation's largest singly accredited statewide community college system serving nearly 200,000 students annually.
