INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The City of Indianapolis and Roche Diagnostics are proud to announce Speedway High School as the winner of the VEX Excellence Award at the 3rd Annual Indy VEX Robotics Championship (IndyVRC). Students from the winning team will receive scholarships from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a 5 foot tall trophy and will travel to Louisville, Kentucky in April for the VEX Robotics High School World Championship.
“Indy has the largest city-wide robotics competition in the nation,” Mayor Ballard said. “The impact this event has on students lasts far beyond their time in school. Students are engaged in subjects that will help them succeed in college and careers later in life. Congratulations to this year's winners and to every student who participated this year.”
Providence Cristo Rey High School and Bishop Chatard High School captured the VEX Tournament Champion awards for winning the alliance competition. Alliances are made up of three teams, and they work together to score the most points against other alliances throughout the rounds of finals.
In the middle school program, Franklin Township Middle School East won the VEX IQ Excellence Award, winning them a bid to the state tournament. Franklin Township Middle School East, along with Heritage Christian School, won the VEX IQ Teamwork Championship and also received a bid to the state tournament.
This was the first year for elementary level competition. Stonybrook Intermediate Academy won the first-ever elementary VEX IQ Excellence Award, which included a bid to the state tournament. Both Stonybrook and St. Thomas Aquinas School won the elementary Teamwork Champions awards, which also included a bid to the state tournament.
Since the first IndyVRC in January 2013, the competition has grown to include high school, middle school and elementary level competition.
Indy's is the largest city-wide VEX robotics competition in the country. This year, 49 high school teams, 60 middle school teams and 17 elementary teams competed.
This year's STEM Fair offered more than 30 booths of interactive activities for the public including displays from the IMPD bomb squad robot, race car from Chip Ganassi Racing, and DNA bracelets from Roche Diagnostics.
Dozens of community partners came together to make the event possible by funding robotics kits for teams. Leading the effort was Roche Diagnostics as the title sponsor alongside TechPoint Foundation for Youth, Project Lead The Way, and Pacers Sports and Entertainment.
