A job fair designed for military veterans and their spouses is set for Thursday in Beech Grove. The Hiring Our Heroes event will feature openings in the rail transit industry and an employment workshop led by General Electric (NYSE: GE) employees. September 15, 2014

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, along with lead sponsor GE, and Amtrak will host “Hiring Our Heroes – Indianapolis Tracks to Success,” a hiring fair for veterans and military spouses. Several employers from the transportation industry are expected to participate with jobs available for veterans and military spouses of all ranks and levels of experience. Companies range from America's biggest employers to dozens of small companies from the region. The event will also include a free employment workshop led by veteran employees at GE. The workshop will focus on resume writing, interview skills, and job search techniques for all military members and their spouses.

Prior to the start of the hiring fair, Amtrak and the city of Beech Grove will dedicate a veterans' flag pole and memorial garden at the Beech Grove facility. The flag pole, flag, gardens, flowers and dedicatory plaque were all designed, built and purchased through the voluntary efforts of Beech Grove's veterans as well as other plant employees. The Indiana Guard Reserve will perform a ceremonial flag raising ceremony and will then lower the flag to half-staff to honor the nation’s fallen veterans.

Since Hiring Our Heroes began in March 2011, more than 1,500 companies have hired 24,000 veterans and military spouses as a result of more than 780 hiring fairs. In March 2012, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Capital One launched Hiring 500,000 Heroes, a national campaign to engage the business community in committing to hire half a million veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. Thus far, more than 1,400 businesses of all sizes have pledged to hire 460,000 heroes toward this goal. To date, 275,000 hires have been confirmed toward this goal.
