Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is set to make what is being called a major public safety announcement this morning. The announcement comes in the face of a crime wave and calls to put more police officers on the street. Last weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television, Mayor Ballard said the city is preparing to take a “holistic effort to deal with crime over the next 20-25 years.” The announcement is set for 10:30 a.m. at Old City Hall.

Ballard estimates 1,000 people are “lost in the system” each year. He says that leaves them without skill sets and often leads them to turn to crime.

During his interview on Inside INdiana Business Television, Ballard said the city's business community can help address crime by providing job opportunities to at-risk youth and released and reformed offenders. He says anyone interested in helping can also donate money to the Public Safety Foundation.
