Merrillville, Ind. — Legacy Foundation announced today that Carolyn Saxton will be the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Foundation, Lake County’s leading philanthropic partner.
Saxton will assume her new duties on June 4, 2014, succeeding Leigh Morris who has been Interim President since October 2013. She comes to Legacy Foundation from Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City where she served as executive director for over eight years.
“Carolyn not only has the professional qualifications as a Certified Fund Raising Executive, but she also has had a wealth of experience as a community foundation leader, having served as Executive Director of the Oak Park, Illinois, Community Foundation/Community Chest,” said Legacy Foundation Board President Nancy Clifford. “Her organizational leadership skills have been amply demonstrated in her current role as President of the Lubeznik Center.”
Under Saxton's leadership, Lubeznik Center for the Arts initiated the First Friday Art Walk and encouraged the development of the Uptown Arts District.
Saxton chaired the Michigan City Public Art Committee and the SculptFusion public art project that brought eight works to downtown Michigan City; and grew the Lubeznik Center for the Arts Lakefront Art Festival to an event that draws over 5000 visitors to Michigan City’s Washington Park each August.
Saxton is active in community and professional organizations, currently serving on the Board of Directors of One Region. She is Past Chairman of the Northwest Indiana Chapter of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals and is Past President of the Oak Park-River Forest Rotary Club.
Most recently she has been a prime mover in the creation of ArtSpace in Michigan City, converting a large long-vacant historic office building into contemporary loft and studio space for artists. She developed a Creative Aging Program for elders of the Pokagon Native American Tribe, which was one of only seven such programs funded nationally.
Saxton and her husband, Bill Gregory, are residents of Ogden Dunes, where they have had extensive community involvement.
