News Release

South Bend, Ind. — The fifth annual Rip the Duck youth lacrosse tournament is set to take place at the Jr. Irish fields this weekend, and record numbers are turning out to participate. With 126 teams scheduled to compete, and 2,500 athletes hitting the fields, Rip the Duck is posed to bring in an economic impact of $654,765 for the weekend-long competition.

“South Bend has become a great destination for youth sports,” says Meghan Huff, sports sales manager for Visit South Bend Mishawaka. “Not only do we have an array of facilities for all kinds of sports, but our community as a whole makes for a great experience for the athletes and the family members traveling with them!”

Teams will be coming from nine states outside of Indiana, some as far away as Texas and Arizona. The competition has steadily grown in its five years, with 100 teams having been part of the tournament in 2013. All participating teams also receive tickets to check out a Notre Dame Lacrosse game while in town.

“We have loved our relationship with South Bend and Notre Dame,” says Mike Gabel, co-owner of True Lacrosse. “The experience these kids get from attending Rip the Duck is like no other tournament. We love the atmosphere of the tournament, South Bend, and the excitement of attending the Notre Dame Men’s game.”

All economic impact quantities were calculated using the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) Event Impact Calculator. All information is based on local market size and other information specific to St. Joseph County to generate the most accurate numbers possible.
