The U.S. Coast Guard investigation into a BP Whiting refinery oil spill into Lake Michigan is complete. Our partners at Lakeshore Public Media report the findings have been sent to a hearing officer in Washington D.C. who will determine potential penalties. A ruling from the officer could come within a month.

BP would be able to appeal any fines or other corrective actions levied by the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard spokesman tells Lakeshore Public Media the investigation is focusing on a connection between a crude distillation unit and a cooling water system.

Last month, crews announced they had found “no visible oil” in Lake Michigan and began removing containment booms and other equipment from the affected area.
