A college resources website has recognized three universities in the state on a national list of “Best Colleges For Students With Children.” The BestColleges.com rankings include Purdue University North Central, which placed first overall. Along with the Westville-based school, the list also includes Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany and Ball State University.

BestColleges says the list is based off of factors including tuition costs, child care services available to students on-campus, proximity to housing designed for families and availability of evening and weekend courses.

The universities in Indiana ranked as follows:

1. Purdue University-North Central Campus – Westville

14. Indiana University-Southeast – New Albany

28. Ball State University – Muncie

News Release

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A just-released survey by bestcolleges.com recognized IU Southeast as being one of the best colleges in the nation for students with children.

Earning a college degree takes a tremendous commitment of resources – especially for students who are moms and dads, too. For those who are determined to finish their education, finding a school that meets their needs as a parent and student is especially important. Bestcolleges.com compiled a list to let students with children know their best options for finding support inside and outside the classroom. IU Southeast's on-campus child care center was ranked 14th best in the nation.

“The Children's Center is one of the crown jewels of our campus. The quality of the IU Southeast experience is enhanced greatly thanks to the services offered by Wanda Borrego and her team,” said Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs Jason Meriwether. “For our students, employees, and community friends who are parents, the Children's Center provides a safe and healthy environment that promotes learning and offers an engaging curriculum.”

The IU Southeast Children Center celebrates its 36th anniversary in 2014. Children between the ages of three and twelve years are welcome to attend from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; the daily schedule includes two meals and snacks, hands-on activities, and outdoor recreation. The center is primarily used by students, faculty and staff at IU Southeast; although it is a licensed daycare facility open to the public.

Children's Center Coordinator Wanda Borrego said “At our most recent licensing inspection, our licensing consultant told me that the center is a ‘hidden treasure' in Southern Indiana. Receiving such a prestigious ranking only verifies the excellent care we provide.”

IU Southeast is one of seven campuses of Indiana University. Offering more than 50 degree programs and concentrations, the scenic 180-acre campus is less than 15 minutes from downtown Louisville, Ky. It has an enrollment of more than 6,900 students and employs more than 400 faculty members. About 400 students now live on campus in five fully furnished, lodge-style residence halls. IU Southeast is the most affordable four-year university in the region and offers significant financial aid to a majority of students. IU Southeast is a tobacco-free campus.
