RICHMOND, Ind. – Indiana University East has received final approval for a new graduate degree program, a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics (M.A.T.), from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Applications for the program are now being accepted for admission to the summer or fall 2014 semesters.
The M.A.T. is IU East's sixth graduate program to be added to its academic portfolio since June 2007. IU East's graduate programs include the Master of Science in Education, Master of Science in Management, Master of Social Work, Master of Science in Nursing, and most recently, the Master of Arts in English.
“Our graduate program offerings have been expanding rapidly to meet the needs of eastern Indiana and western Ohio,” said Larry Richards, executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “We have received an excellent response to our first master's degree programs, and I have no doubt that we will experience the same with these newer programs.”
“The M.A.T. in Mathematics is a great opportunity for teachers and prospective teachers in our region. It provides a path to certification as a mathematics teacher for those who want to become teachers, but it also contains 18 graduate hours of Mathematics, which enables our graduates to teach also at the community college,” said Markus Pomper, Mathematics Department chair and associate professor of Mathematics.
The M.A.T. is primarily for licensed secondary math teachers who have a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. An M.A.T. will broaden a teacher's qualification, and allow him or her to teach dual credit courses at the high school, or introductory college courses in mathematics.
The M.A.T also offers a route to teacher certification for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a closely related field. These students have the option of completing the Transition to Teaching (T2T) program through the School of Education in order to obtain a teaching license.
Students completing the M.A.T. will earn a minimum of 18 credit hours in mathematics. The courses are scheduled so that a student can complete the program in two years if they take the required courses for their chosen track in a prescribed sequence. Also, many of the classes for this program are offered online.
