Production Finally Set For Tipton Plant

Chrysler Group LLC is putting the finishing touches on a transmission plant that is expected to result in 875 new jobs over the next two years. The effort follows two failed attempts to launch manufacturing operations in the facility. Tipton Mayor Don Havens believes the city's location played a key role in attracting the automaker. There have been multiple previous attempts to launch production at the facility. Chrysler hoped to partner with Getrag to make transmissions there, but both companies declared bankruptcy during the recession.
Colorado-based Abound Solar had planned to make solar panels at the building, but that company also filed for bankruptcy before beginning production.
Tipton Mayor Don Havens says the plant will allow the city to participate in the economic growth occurring in neighboring Hamilton and Howard counties. He hopes the new jobs will help reverse Tipton's current trend of an “aging and declining population.”
Chrysler Chief of Global Powertrain Manufacturing detailed the automaker's plans Wednesday at a gathering of the Tipton Chamber of Commerce.
