The mayor of South Bend is calling for an expanded IT strategy and a new workforce training initiative. Pete Buttigieg outlined his goals Wednesday night during his third State of the City address. He also discussed the administration's expectations as he prepares for a deployment to Afghanistan at the end of the month. Buttigieg is set to leave the country for six months as part of his U.S. Navy Reserve obligations.

City Controller Mark Neal will become deputy mayor and handle day-to-day duties during the deployment.

The city is in the midst of preparing for next year's sesquicentennial celebration.

During the presentation, Buttigieg touted the city's recent achievements and partnerships with nearby communities and local educational institutions.

He says during the upcoming 12 months, the city “will need to be as disciplined and energetic as ever” to achieve its objectives.
