The city of Evansville has made its pitch to be the site of an expanded Indiana University Medical School. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has announced the city wants the facility to be in a six-block area adjacent to the Ford Center downtown. Other proposals involve potential locations in Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. The Evansville proposal also includes property owned by Deaconess Clinic, which would not be impacted by the school expansion.

Deaconess says it fully supports the creation of a new inter-professional medical campus in the Evansville area.

Institutions including Ivy Tech Community College, the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana plan to have a role in the expanded facility.

Officials hope to start construction next year.
