A former publisher of The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne has died. Richard Inskeep joined the newspaper in 1949 and served as publisher for 23 years. The Bluffton native and Indiana University graduate was 89. Inskeep is credited with keeping Fort Wayne a two-newspaper city.

A joint operating agreement with the News-Sentinel in 1950 called on both publications to share advertising, circulation and production staff. It also called for most of the profits to go to the News-Sentinel.

Inskeep's efforts led to a new deal in 1980 that established a more competitive business environment for The Journal-Gazette.

Inskeep was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1992.
