Obituary
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Jackson R. Lehman, former Chairman, CEO of Fort Wayne National Bank, 82, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013. He was a native of Berne, Indiana and worked for Fort Wayne National Bank for 40 years. Jack graduated from Bluffton University in Ohio in 1953 and was an active duty Korean War Army veteran.
He received an MBA from Indiana University in 1956, and in the same year, went to work as a trainee at Fort Wayne National Bank. He retired in 1997 as Chairman and CEO. Jack was very active in community affairs, serving as the Trustee of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for many years. He was Chairman of the Trustees when the Exposition Hall was built, the Memorial Baseball Field for the Wizards, and the Raising the Roof expansion of the Coliseum. He was a long time supporter and was very active with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and served as President of the Board. Jack had an integral part in creating the Freimann String Quartet.
He was also President of the United Way of Allen County, acted as advisor for Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana and was inducted into the Greater Fort Wayne Business Hall of Fame. He was active in the Indiana Bankers Association and served as President. Jack was also a member of the Board of Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust, and co-chaired the Capital Campaign for the renovation of the Courthouse. He worked with the English and Mitchell families and served as an advisor to the English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation. Jack also served as a member of the Advisory Board of Pizza Hut Fort Wayne, and Pizza Hut, Indiana for 15 years.
In 1996, he was awarded the Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh. He was also awarded a Doctorate of Humane Studies from Purdue University and received the same degree from the University of Saint Francis. Jack was on the Embassy Board for many years and headed up a Capital Campaign of $5 million dollars to enlarge the stage and renovate the lobby of the old hotel. Jack on many occasions served on the Board of the YMCA.
Jack was a member of the Fort Wayne Country Club, serving as President and a member of Bermuda Dunes Country Club, in Bermuda Dunes, California. He was a 52 year member of the Plymouth Congregational Church and served in various capacities such as Chairman of the Board, Trustees, Treasurer and Chairman of the Endowment Committee.
Jack enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Carol (Sprunger) Lehman; four children Reverend Janet (Jeffrey) Funk, Ray Lehman, Susan (Dr. Steven) Hoagburg, and Robert (Denise Daniels) Lehman, all of Fort Wayne; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. Saturday at the Plymouth Congregational Church. 501 W. Berry St. with Dr. John P. Gardner officiating, calling 1 hour prior.
