The FedEx Express Hub is marking 25 years at Indianapolis International Airport. The company says it handles more than one million tons of cargo each year at the facility.

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — The FedEx Express Hub at Indianapolis

International Airport opened for business 25 years ago with 316 employees and a handful of airplanes. Since that time, the hub has tripled in size, more than doubled its sorting capacity and makes up a majority of the 7,000 FedEx employees working in the Indianapolis area.

“The Indianapolis Hub has played a significant role in the FedEx network for the past 25 years,” said David Bronczek, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Express.

“This operation has been a shining example of our focus on world-class facilities that allow us to provide an unmatched level of reliable shipping services across our global network.”

Locally, the Hub has had a substantial effect on the growth of Indianapolis International Airport (IND) with the operation handling over a million tons of cargo a year. IND is ranked the eighth largest cargo airport in North America and 22nd largest worldwide by volume.

“FedEx Express operations here create benefits for virtually every aspect of our organization,” said Robert Duncan, executive director with the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “The benefits FedEx Express creates at IND go well beyond the airport and its passengers,” Duncan added. “FedEx is responsible for a significant piece of IND's positive economic impact in Central Indiana, which is estimated at more than $4.5 billion per year and includes tens of millions of dollars of local tax revenues and tens of thousands of local jobs.”
