Independent Colleges of Indiana Inc. has promoted Mary Ellen Hamer to vice president. She previously served as director of strategic communications and outreach. September 25, 2013

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Mary Ellen Hamer has been promoted to vice president by the Independent Colleges of Indiana. ICI serves as the collective voice for Indiana's 31 private, nonprofit colleges and universities, advocating for excellence and choice in higher education for all students.

Hamer has served ICI since 2005, previously as director of strategic communications and outreach. At ICI, she has revitalized the association's campus tour program for high-school counselors, launched its Indiana Private College Week initiative, coordinated communications planning in support of ICI's advocacy efforts for student financial aid, and forged close working relationships with key campus officers.

“As ICI's model of public engagement has been shaped over recent years, so too has Mary Ellen's leadership role,” says Richard L. Ludwick, ICI president and CEO, “in helping develop that model and in more directly representing ICI to various audiences. It is deserving and necessary that her title reflect both that work and the increasing public face of it.”

Earlier in her career, she directed community relations for two of the state's largest school districts, South Bend Community School Corporation and MSD of Lawrence Township, serving as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet. Prior to that, she served as director of communications at Culver Academies (IN) and taught English both at Culver and a public high school in Pennsylvania.

Hamer earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Marywood University (PA) and is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America.

Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) is a nonprofit association that represents the state's 31 private nonprofit colleges and universities. ICI member institutions enroll some 90,000 students (approximately 20 percent of all students statewide) and annually produce 35 percent of all bachelor's degrees in Indiana.
