Indianapolis, Ind. — The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) recently announced nearly $30 million in grants to museums across the nation. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art will receive over $120,000, through the Museums for America program, for a multi-tiered project that will help provide preservation improvements for its collections storage vault. This IMLS Museums for America award is one of 244 being distributed across the country.
IMLS director Susan Hildreth will present a workshop and ceremony on Capitol Hill on Sept. 18, to recognize the 2013 museum winners. The event will showcase the many ways museums support learning experiences, serve as community anchors and are stewards of cultural and scientific heritage through the preservation of their collections.
“It is exciting to see the many ways our newly announced grants further these important museum roles,” said IMLS Director Susan Hildreth. “I congratulate the slate of 2013 museum grant recipients for planning projects that advance innovation in museum practice, lifelong learning and community engagement.”
Eiteljorg director of collections, Amy McKune, believes the preservation grant dollars will help the museum improve its care of collections in unexpected ways.
“I appreciate that IMLS funds these more mundane, but essential needs,” she said. “The award increases the museum’s capacity to be an effective steward of the collections it holds in the public trust. We are honored to receive this funding.”
The Eiteljorg will use the funds for several collections preservation efforts in the museum’s vault:
– Replacing 25 year old carpet with low maintenance, inert flooring;
– Adding an early warning fire detection system;
– Purchasing storage cabinets to house Native American clothing and textiles;
– Adding five space-saving print storage units to re-house framed artwork.
