Indiana House Representative Phyllis Pond (R-85) has announced her resignation. She has represented her northeast Indiana district since 1978. Pond says a diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis is leading her to leave office in September.

Indianapolis, Ind. — “It is with a heavy heart that I announce Rep. Phyllis Pond’s decision to resign as a member of the House of Representatives. Due to her recent diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis, Rep. Pond has formally notified me and has determined it necessary to resign effective Oct. 15, 2013.

“Phyllis has been a pillar of strength throughout her career as a state representative dating back to 1978. As a former Kindergarten teacher, her insight has been invaluable in all of the education policies that we have enacted throughout her tenure here.

“While she has honorably served her constituents of Allen and DeKalb counties, she has also been a true stateswoman for all Hoosiers over her prestigious career in the legislature. She has served on several key committees including the House Ways and Means Committee as well as the Judiciary Committee.

“Her legacy will continue to be remembered through the many pieces of legislation she has been involved with over the years including the Primetime Education Bill, that lowered class sizes to 18 in kindergarten through the third grade as well as providing class sizes larger than 18 with a teacher's aide. She also authored the CLEO law, which developed a plan to assist minority students to attend law school and to one day become lawyers.

“Phyllis has been a steadfast leader over the course of her time at the Statehouse. She has been a leader in our caucus and has forged a new path for women legislators in Indiana. Her dedication and service will continue to be fondly remembered by all. I wish her well, and know that her larger-than-life presence will be greatly missed by many here at the Statehouse.”
