A panel of experts will analyze the United States Department of Agriculture's latest crop report at the Indiana State Fair. Representatives from the USDA, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and Purdue University will take park in next week's event.

August 5, 2013

News Release

West Lafayette, Ind. — A panel of experts from Purdue University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture will be on hand at the Indiana State Fair Aug. 12 to analyze the USDA's first projections of crop production and yields for 2013.

The event will be at 1:30 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Farm Bureau Building. Attendance is free with admission to the fair.

The report will include updates about national and state crop acreage, progress and yields. The data is expected to be a sharp contrast to last year's August crop production report for the eastern Corn Belt states, which at the time were in the stranglehold of one of the worst droughts on record.

Panel experts will discuss crop conditions and the report's data and offer analysis of what both could mean for farmers statewide and nationally. They also will answer questions from the audience and be available for media interviews.

The experts:

* Chris Hurt, Purdue Extension agricultural economist specializing in both grain and livestock commodities economics.

* Bob Nielsen, Purdue Extension corn specialist.

* Shaun Casteel, Purdue Extension soybean specialist.

* Greg Matli, state statistician for the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office.

* Gina Sheets, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

Jay Akridge, Glenn W. Sample Dean of Purdue Agriculture, will moderate the panel.

The Farm Bureau Building is on the north end of the Indiana State Fairgrounds near Gate 12 off 42nd Street.

General admission tickets to the fair are $10 per person at the gate or $7 in advance from the fair's website or some local retail stores. For more information and a complete list of where to buy tickets, visit http://www.in.gov/statefair/.
