South Bend Set For Bump in Tourism

South Bend, Ind. — Some may be surprised to learn, but South Bend is currently in the throes of our busiest time for the tourism industry. This year, the month of July boasts some of our largest conventions and sports tournaments of the summer. The last two weeks of July are particularly busy, seeing over 6,000 visitors filling local hotels, restaurants and attractions.
“The last two weeks of July promise to be some of the busiest weeks of the year with another nice cross section of events,” says Rob DeCleene, executive director for Visit South Bend Mishawaka. “A national car show which pays tribute to our impressive automobile heritage in our community, the stalwart AYOP who has called Notre Dame and South Bend their only home throughout the past 44 years, and of course a couple of great youth sports events which continue to enhance and cultivate the impressive resume of our youth/amateur sports market for our destination.”
This week, the Buick Club of America will be hosting the Buick National Meet, as well as celebrating the 110th year of Buick, at the Gillespie Conference Center. This event is expected to bring in nearly 1,000 classic car aficionados, and roughly 500 Buicks of every make, model and year. All events taking place during the Buick National Meet, which includes a swap meet and car show, are free and open to the public.
Then come the baseball players as Elite Baseball World Series games kick-off. Teams from as far away as California will be coming to South Bend to vie for the championship title, with games taking place at Coveleski Stadium and the University of Notre Dame baseball fields. Game play starts Wednesday, July 17 and will continue through Saturday, July 27.
In addition, for the 44th consecutive year, the National Baton Twirling Association will be holding America’s Youth on Parade (AYOP) at the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus. More than 4,000 twirlers, dancers, band members and more will be heading to town, with competition beginning Tuesday, July 23 and culminating with the “big show” on Saturday, July 27. All five days of competition for AYOP will be free and open to the public.
Pastime Tournaments will also be holding their final championship of the summer in South Bend, as roughly 600 folks fill the stands to watch the 17U division compete. Pastime Tournaments has held 6 competitions at playing fields across the area, including the diamonds at Notre Dame and St. Joe High School, for the past month.
