The state has approved plans by Ball State University to build a new $4.6 million planetarium. The school says it will be the largest in Indiana and include a 52-foot dome. Dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities at Ball State Michael Maggiotto discussed the project about a year ago on Inside INdiana Business Television. The planetarium will be named after Indianapolis businessman Charlie Brown, who provided a lead gift for the project.

Brown is a 1971 Ball State graduate and the co-owner of Southern Bells, which operates Taco Bell and KFC restaurants.

Ball State anticipates the new facility will be one of the top 10 university planetariums in the U.S.

It will also have a key role in science education. The current planetarium is about 45-years old and has been used by more than 200,000 K-12 and 60,000 Ball State students.
