IUPUI's Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy has cut the ribbon on a new system that converts biomass into energy. The Stalk Stoker turns “woody” plant materials into synthesized gas that can be used to fuel generators. The technology can also be used to produce liquid biofuel.

Though originally designed for use on farms, the Stalk Stoker can be used to heat buildings and the liquids can be used to power vehicles.

Waste materials that have been tested for use in the technology include clean wood waste from furniture factories or saw mills, food waste, cardboard packaging materials and landscape trimmings.
