News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. — On Thursday, June 13, the board of the Central Indiana Senior Fund approved six grants to local organizations for programs designed to secure and maintain basic needs including adequate access to nutrition, independence, education, engagement and healthier aging. A fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, the Senior Fund awarded $195,000 in grants to six organizations, including:

• Families First of Indiana: The grant will support the organization’s Vistas guardianship program, which supports older adults and adults challenged by developmental disability or chronic mental illness. The Vistas program helps participants secure and maintain basic needs, achieve optimal independence, protect them from exploitation and enhance their quality of life.

• Joy's House: This general operating grant supports several areas of Joy’s House operations including art therapy, guest scholarships and an upcoming monthly training series for family caregivers.

• Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana: Grant funds will be directed to Gleaners’ efforts to purchase and distribute nutritious foods for seniors who face food insecurity and hunger. Fifteen percent of Gleaners’ food pantry visitors are aged 55 years or older.

• OASIS Indianapolis: This grant will support continuing education and engagement programs for local seniors. With a range of classes, locations and volunteer opportunities, OASIS programs help seniors to stay physically and intellectually active.

• John H. Boner Center: This grant will provide transportation support for low-income seniors in the Near Eastside, the Near Northside and Fountain Square. Transportation support is essential for many seniors participating in the Boner Center’s on-site adult and senior programs.

• Hawthorne Community Center: Grant funds will support the center’s senior program which provides daily transportation for participants and access to the Center for Working Families program onsite. The Center for Working Families program provides financial counseling, income support coaching and employment assistance.

“Aging should not result in decreased access or engagement in out community,” said Brian Payne, President and CEO of the Central Indiana Community Foundation. “The Central Indiana Senior Fund is dedicated to addressing the critical basic needs of our community's older adults while empowering seniors to live full, active lives.”

The Senior Fund's mission is to financially support programs and services that promote quality living for older adults in central Indiana. Its goals for helping central Indiana’s older adults are to promote overall good health and wellness, ensure that the basic needs of the low-income are met, enable older adults to reside in the environments of their choice and provide life-affirming opportunities.
